What Happened Locally in 2007?

American Sell-Outs Take Chavez Blood Money

The more I see, the more I realize that almost no one really cares about right and wrong. They care about money and supporting anyone who opposes George W. Bush."

Over a coffee last week with a high-level official of our government, that was the comment made to me regarding the Hugo Chavez-Citgo-Joe Kennedy II propaganda campaign now running across our nation. In TV commercials and in full-page print advertising, former Rep. Joe Kennedy thanks "our good friends in Venezuela" for helping to heat America's poor.

Other than to accept blood money, the government official I spoke with was at a loss to understand why some in the American media would run ads by a thug who exploits and ignores the poor in his nation, creates fear in the region and is, as a major newspaper just described him, an ally to terrorists, drug traffickers and mass murderers.

The Winner's Cycle

What do you get when you combine one wicker rocking chair, a thrift-store bicycle and 13 very motivated mechanical engineering students? A vehicle that can navigate an obstacle course at 25 mph without spilling a single can of pop. Behold the Rudy Hawkenheimer, Seattle University's first-ever entry in the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, a 21-year-old event sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Developed over the course of the 2003-2004 school year, the "Hawk" so named because students thought the moniker sounded sophisticated and technical and would scare their opponentswon third place in the utility-class competition. "The whole idea was to design a vehicle and enter a competition that wasn't too technically demanding, so even the freshmen on the team could make meaningful contributions," says Assistant Professor Frank Shih, who led the undergraduates on their quest for an SU superbike.

EBay Chief Whitman, Web Pioneer, Plans to Retire

EBay's third-quarter listings of auction items for sale, a key barometer of the auction unit's health, fell 3%.

The timing of Ms. Whitman's retirement is of her own choosing, say people familiar with the situation. Not long after she joined eBay, Ms. Whitman declared that no CEO should stay more than a decade in the same job because people need new challenges and organizations need fresh perspectives. While she has backed away from that comment in recent years, Ms. Whitman now appears to be making good on that early pledge as she approaches her 10-year anniversary as eBay CEO this March.

Under Ms. Whitman, eBay has become one of the Internet's most successful businesses by pioneering a way for strangers to trade with each other online. She led the company through its September 1998 initial public offering, and eBay has since delivered more than 40 consecutive quarters of sequential revenue growth.

Apple Cup Preview: Where Are They Now? Huskies fullback Robin Earl ran ...

He was this huge guy from Kent with the medieval name, a tight end for a season and a half before the coaching staff decided to really terrorize defenses and put him at fullback.

Few sights were more intimidating than 6-foot-5, 250-pound Robin Earl barreling out of the backfield with a football under his arm and looking to punish someone, still wearing No. 99 after moving from the line.

Earl even played some tailback for fun in his final game with the Huskies, the 1976 Apple Cup, contributing 121 of the Huskies' 354 yards rushing in a 51-32 victory in Spokane. He wasn't his team's leading rusher that day, deferring to Ronnie Rowland, who piled up 196 yards, but he felt responsible.

"He followed me every play," Earl said.

Earl, who lost to the Cougars as a freshman tight end and then won three consecutive Apple Cup games as a fullback, felt melancholy after the final victory over his state rival.

Winter storms at both ends of the country dump snow, snarl travel

CHICAGO (AP) — Winter storms at both ends of the country dumped snow and snarled air and land travel Friday, killing at least 10 people, blocking major highways and even stranding 400 train passengers in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

Nearly 7 1/2 inches of snow was reported at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport before the front moved out of the area Friday. About 500 flights were canceled at O'Hare, which canceled 600 flights Thursday and housed hundreds of stranded travelers who spent the night awaiting planes from other cities also affected by the storm.

At least 12 inches of snow was reported in Springfield by Friday morning, said National Weather Service meteorologist Gino Izzi. Other parts of Illinois saw similar amounts.

"If you don't have to be out here, don't," Ty Wilson, a very wet Chicago bicycle messenger, said as he stopped along a slushy street between morning deliveries.

July 2007

So, for that matter, does The Standard-Times of New Bedford, whose deep reporting on yesterday's proceedings shows that this fight is a long way from being over. First, consider this, from Steve Decosta's story: After casting their votes on the agreement and before the final tally was announced, the body, on a hand vote, ironically rejected a nonbinding question to approve casino gambling in town. Only about half the voters remained on the high school athletic field for that tally."I don't think that's a true indication of how people feel, because so many people had left," said Marsha Brunelle, selectmen chairwoman.Asked if that outcome tainted the vote on the agreement, Mr. Marshall [Glenn Marshall, the Wampanoag chief] said: "It's the end of a hot day, people get tired, people leave. The true number is the one that got counted."But casino opponents would not minimize their victory."That's the root question," said Jacqueline Tolosko, president of the anti-casino group Casinofacts.

The Slow Traveller

In Brisbane we swapped our gargantuan cargo ship for an aged panel van, vaguely fitted out as a camping vehicle and sporting a graffiti-inspired paint job of dubious taste. The 'Flames of Hell' motif on one side was hardly going to allow us to blend in sensitively among the foliage of the national parks on our slow journey to Sydney. Unless we wanted to pose as a forest fire, which was probably unwise given the drought-induced tinderbox state much of the countryside was in.

We soon learnt that the main hazard on Australian roads is not other drivers but suicidal wildlife. Evolution has given the unique marsupial fauna of the continent many attributes to cope with the harsh environment. However, dealing with speeding hunks of metal while crossing the road isn't one of them. On the dashboard a huge sticker warned us: 'Don't fucking swerve for Kangaroos or you'll roll real bad! Who's going to survive? The Roo, the Emu ...
