Monday wild card

As you are all aware, a local newspaper printed an editorial that criticized our City for requiring Ironman USA to reimburse our City for services provided during the bike race through Post Falls. I wanted to give you some information on what some of the other Cities that host Ironman events require. Please do not think that I am picking a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel. I would like to give you information about Ironman events in other areas and cities."

P&G announces retirements, promotions

Procter & Gamble Co. promoted a new head to its snack division while also announcing the retirement of its chief legal officer, Jim Johnson, whose career spanned six CEOs, seven presidential administrations and a nearly eight-fold increase in corporate revenue.

Johnson, 64, will retire June 1. He will be succeeded by Steven Jemison, 56, P&G's deputy general counsel.

P&G made the announcement while also reporting the promotion of John Goodwin, 44, to head its newly revised snack and pet care division. The division is the process of breaking out its $1.6 billion Folgers coffee business - acquired by P&G in 1963 - into a separate company.

The division's former head, Jamie Egasti, will head up the new Folgers Coffee Co. when P&G finalizes that transaction, likely between July and December.

Delphi to Introduce Multec Electronic Fuel Injection for One- and Two ...

Delphi Multec EFI provides manufacturers an easy and convenient way to implement an electronic fuel injection system for gasoline and flexible-fuel powered engines. Designed to help manufacturers meet exhaust and evaporative emissions requirements for one- and two-cylinder engines, the system also achieves targets for engine performance and fuel consumption. Delphi Multec EFI can reduce fuel consumption in motorcycles from 10 to 15 percent.

"With Delphi Multec EFI, motorcycle manufacturers around the world can look to Delphi for the most efficient electronic fuel injection system for virtually any demand," said Ran Wu, Delphi's Multec EFI product manager. "Stringent emission legislation is being enacted in all corners of the globe; Multec EFI is one way to achieve these emissions goals."

Delphi developed the system for motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and scooter manufacturers around the world.

Shooting puts Katy Trail runners, walkers on alert

Runners and walkers were on guard Monday, a day after an armed robbery and shooting at an apartment complex near the Katy Trail, but said they were not deterred from their exercise routines.

"I feel safe," Jim Smeeding said Monday as he walked, accompanied by his giant schnauzer, Zeus. "He's a fairly intimidating presence."

Reports of crime on or near the trail are worrisome, Mr. Smeeding said, but he and his wife have felt safe enough to walk from their home on Blackburn Avenue to the American Airlines Center for a Mavericks game.

Pharmacy and accounting volunteers fill important roles

During World War II he joined the Navy as a pharmacist. However, the Navy sent him to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to get a degree in marine engineering and then sent him out to sea.

After the war he was a neighborhood pharmacist and then a medical service representative for Eli Lilly & Co. The company transferred him to Jacksonville in 1973. Currently he is a consultant pharmacist for nursing homes and surgery centers.

He was attending a meeting of the Northeast Florida Society of Hospital Pharmacists and an old friend, Jim Burt, came to speak to the group and ask for volunteers to work at the pharmacy at Volunteers in Medicine. Located downtown on East Duval Street, VIM is a volunteer-run medical clinic improving the health of Jacksonville area residents by providing free outpatient medical services to the working uninsured.

IDB approves US$176.7 million for urban transportation program for ...

The Inter-American Development Bank today approved a US$176.7 million loan to Brazil for an urban transportation program for its Federal District, where around 2.8 million commutes are made each day.

“This initiative will improve the mobility and accessibility for the population of the district, particularly its low-income segments, by further integrating its communities through financing of a modern Bus Rapid Transit System," said IDB team leader Rosana Brandao. “This will help to improve the circulation and safety of motorized and non-motorized forms of transportation."

The program will invest in road and urban infrastructure, including bus transfer stations, roadway and pedestrian safety, the construction of ramps at crosswalks, sidewalks and pedestrian walkways for persons with physical disabilities, the modernization of the traffic light system, bicycle paths or lanes, and the strengthening of institutional and management capacity in the area of transportation.
