Tourists create more CO2 than we do

Last week, Environment Minister Jane Davidson published an Energy Route Map which aims to generate all Wales' electricity from renewable energy sources by 2025.

Prof Cooke said, "Currently, CO2 emissions per head in Wales, at 14.2 tonnes per head per year, are the third highest in Europe and the 12th highest globally, even though much of Wales is rural and sparsely populated. But tourists, of whom Wales has around 12 million a year, push our total emissions much higher.

"Although tourists tend to come to Wales for quite short periods, they are responsible for higher CO2 emissions through heating and lighting, car use and waste."

Prof Cooke said, "I'm not saying Wales should be deterring visitors. Obviously tourism is a very important part of the Welsh economy.

A Pair of Bosnian Cafés Compete on a Queens Corner

Something a Serbian-American friend once told me stuck in my head. "In Astoria, all the former Yugoslavians live side by side. Whatever part they played in old conflicts is left behind in the old country. They all speak the same language and eat the same food, and no one asks in the butcher shop, 'Are you a Croat?' 'Are you a Serb?', or 'Are you a Bosnian Muslim?'"

Indeed, eastern Astoria has become a wonderland of Balkan food and culture since the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991 and the cessation of Bosnian hostilities in 1995. The corner of 42nd Street and 30th Avenue is a particularly rich hotbed of transplanted culture. Black Bull Meat Market (42-10 30th Avenue) anchors the neighborhood, and it's just the sort of butcher shop my friend was talking about, displaying homemade sausages and smoked meats in the refrigerated window case.

Police chief explains Children's Theatre probe

If so much money was involved, why did the City never ask for an audit rather than implying the staff was at fault? The City management is to blame if there were accounting questions and never an order to audit the theatre accounts. Also, how does this relate to the equipment the staff reported missing after one or two break ins? Do the police think the Friends stole the equipment???? what is going on??

Will International Builders Show bring a boost to Orange County ...

Since 2005, home builders from across the country have flooded International Drive and surrounding retail and dining districts, giving an early-year boost in business to everyone from hotels and theme parks to steak houses and strip joints.

"We're looking real strong for all week," said Jeff Coyle, operating partner of Vito's Chop House, which has been taking dinner reservations from convention goers for the past six months. "We have a lot of return business."

Cyclo-cross news & racing roundup for November 8

After Paolo Guerciotti announced that he does not have the necessary budget for the world cup round in Milan that was scheduled to be held on December 8, the event has been cancelled, but only for the elite men.

The races for the elite women, junior men and under 23 men will still take place as scheduled.

Vandenbroucke no show

Frank Vandenbroucke has been up to his old tricks again, but this time in the sport of cyclo-cross. After accepting invitations to race the Koppenbergcross and the superprestige round in Hamme-Zogge the Belgian wild child was a DNS for both races.

Vandenbroucke did show up to the Koppenbergcross but at the last minute decided that the race was too dangerous and therefore didn't start, while in Hamme-Zogge he simply didn't show up.

The Di Blasi trike: A different kind of green tech hybrid

Last year about this time, I brought my neglected 15-year-old GT mountain bike down to a local repair shop for some much-needed TLC. After spurning all sales pitches to invest in a new one, I then dropped nearly as much moolah to get my faithful ride street-legal. And there it sits, tires going flat in the garage. Chalk it up to the hills in my New Jersey town, which are a little bit too intense for my desk-job thighs. New Year's Resolution #1 …

So, what to do for quick trips into town? Oh, for the old moped I used to share with my brothers in high school. Actually, scratch that. I don't even want to know how fuel-inefficient it was. Today, there are so many more interesting options available to folks like me who are trying to avoid taking the car out except when necessary for longer treks.

Britain 's Muslim Gang Culture: Coming Soon to a Town Near You?

A fugitive could climb through the window and use the nails to climb down the wall beneath.

In 1899, Clarence Rook published Hooligan Nights, an account of the life of a young criminal and gang leader from Southwark called Patrick Hooligan. He would carry a "chopper" with him, in case he met rival gangs. During the 1950s, much of the criminal activity in Soho was controlled by Maltese gangs. In the 1960s the Kray twins controlled organized crime gangs in East London, while the Richardsons controlled gangs south of the river.

The current gang culture of London and other British cities, like those in the rookeries of former times, draws its membership from the poor and socially dispossessed, who attempt to assert control over small closely-defined territories.

Capturing the Moment: NFL Films at Super Bowl XLII

It is no different, really, than the pregame meal for the two teams. All the personnel gather in a hotel ballroom and after the dishes are cleared away, we go over the game plan one last time. Every assignment is checked, every detail is reviewed.
