| Hoffman Will Propose Bill To Shield Counties From RAGBRAI Liability
As the Legislature gets to work, in Des Moines, RAGBRAI officials, county supervisors and bike riders will be watching to see if legislation emerges that could help shape the future of Iowa's great bicycle ride. One western Iowa lawmaker says he'll propose a bill that would provide "immunity" for counties where riders roll. "I think its important we get this immunity for counties," said Rep. Clarence Hoffman, (R) Charter Oak. Hoffman represents the corner of Crawford County where Kirk Ullrich died almost four years ago. He lost control of his bike after it hit a crack in a county road. His widow sued. And, last fall, she settled with Crawford County for $355,000 dollars. County supervisors then passed a resolution banning the annual bicycle ride from its roads. "If we have to fix our roads, and get them into the shape, so that they're gonna be good for bicycles in every situation, then the money for "Time 21" needs to be doubled," Hoffman said.

I do most of my local errands on my bicycle--no parking hassles, good excercise, and no pollution. Give school kids incentives to ride or walk to school. Have police bike units be role models and teach bicycle safety to kids. Stores can give discounts to bike riders, There is lots we can do! .

The snowy morning of January 29 was not kind to transit riders. It was especially unkind to those, like this reporter, who chose to take the Über-busy 99 B-Line bus to work rather than risk a bicycle accident. What transpired at the intersection of Clark Drive and East Broadway was ugly. Time for a quick bus riders rewind… Around 8:30 a.m., rolling into the exposed bus shelter at Broadway and Clark, on the northwest corner of that intersection, it was strange to see people lined up behind the shelter, out of the view of the road. That is because the slush and muck of the slowly-melting ice and sludge was being sprayed all over us by every passing vehicle in the slow lane. People were covered in muck, and the 99s creaking to a halt were all packed full of people who got on at Commercial Drive.

Adenhart was a much-ballyhooed prospect coming out of Maryland's Williamsport High, a sure-fire first-round pick in the 2004 draft. Green was pitching for Darton College in Georgia, having decided not to sign the previous year when the Astros drafted him in the 11th round. In his final regular-season game as a senior, Adenhart broke off a curveball and felt a pop in his arm. The ligament replacement surgery that followed scared off other teams, but the Angels liked Adenhart -- liked that he threw in the low-to-mid-90s and that his curve was pretty well developed. So they struck a deal with the teenager, telling him to forgo his scholarship offer from North Carolina.
