Design team taps WKU student

A college senior from Western Kentucky has been selected to work on a global design project to create a wind-powered water purifier to benefit impoverished areas that lack electricity.

Zach Pearl, who is studying mechanical engineering at Western Kentucky University, is part of the five-member team contributing to the project from around the world.

"Something like this could possibly be used where there isn't a safe source of drinking water," Pearl said. "This could save lives."

The research is still in early stages, he said, but the group is using computer-generated conceptual drawings to examine the possibility of harnessing wind power.

It's not Pearl's first attempt to design a water purification system. Last year he was part of a team that created a water purification system powered by pedals on a bicycle.

Local business briefs

Medtronic Inc., the Fridley maker of electronic heart devices, said proposed U.S. legislation requiring medical technology companies to disclose payments to doctors should be expanded to businesses of all sizes. The U.S. Senate's Special Committee on Aging holds a hearing on the proposal today. The legislation aims to curb conflicts of interest between surgeons and the device industry, and Medtronic supports that goal, the company said in a prepared statement. But the proposal excludes companies with annual revenue of less than $100 million and physician-owned companies, Medtronic said.

Sex lessons must start at age five

Let's get back to basics where parents took responsibility for the upbringing of their children in areas of sex education, morality, respectability etc. rather than living their own selfish lives. Where are the parents while their children/teenagers are getting into trouble during the early hours and some, sadly, being injured or worse? Until parents act as parents, we'll continue to have the wrong answers with well-intentioned, but godless, idiots wasting their time and our money by trying to make a world safe without the God-given answer of parent responsibility and basic Christian living. .

US Supreme Court Throws Out Wire-Tapping Case

It is claimed that (a) Attif is still alive and living in Pakistan (b) the planes that hit the twin towers is shown in video footage to have had a remote control drone under its belly and that a laser guidance system can be seen from one of the twin towers (c) that the necessary demolition by safety officers subsequent to the two main towers collapsing of tower 6 or 7 was it? was accomplished in a day when experts require about a month to set up a demolition of a building that size thus indicating that this was planned in advance. So to point 7 - there is much evidence of Yes. (8) Yes. Need I say it, but Iraq. Next Iran? (9) Yes. Bush and his friends are doing very well, thank you very much. Things not so good in Oklahoma ("how y'all doin down there?") (10) Yes. See point 6 again. (11) Yes.

Childhood imagination

Two bicycles leaning curbside were the only indication of any children nearby. Beyond them was the woods and not a soul to be seen.

But my son's red-and-blue bike and another one just like it in acid yellow gave it away. The boys were exploring the camp of the "Homeless Man," an invention of their elementary-school imaginations, whom they are certain lives in an empty lot in our subdivision.

It was late afternoon. The school bus had arrived a while ago. It was that meandering hour between schoolwork and homework, when small boys abandon thinking according to the rules, and simply let their minds take them to worlds of their own making.

A special bond between soldiers in Iraq

Graves works with Udo, a yellow Labrador retriever who holds the rank of sergeant 1st class, one higher than Graves. He is the fifth dog Graves has been teamed with.

Graves adopted his first dog after it retired from active duty. The dog died at age 16, from a heart attack while chasing a cat.

His fourth dog was aggressive and liked to bite, nothing like Udo, who is a specialized search dog. That means he isn't aggressive and can run off his leash, wearing a vest that holds a radio through which Graves issues commands.

"If something ever happened to him, I'd never work canine again," Graves said as Udo did a practice run across a field dotted with remnants of once-lethal explosives and other weapons.

Handlers are expected to keep their dogs "on odor" by putting them through such training every month, to ensure they don't lose the ability to detect TNT, C4, AK-47s, wires, metal and the other threats that insurgents have planted across Iraq.

Democrats clash on health, trade and rival tactics

Name 10 positive influences George W. Bush has had on this country, you probably can't and It's non-idiosyncratic people like you who got him elected in the first place, which was an election he stole(who becomes president with 43 percent of the popular vote), that trust me democrats have not forgotten about, and will add the flurry of liberal support in November. And let's put it this way as a writer, political activist, and intellectual I will have lost all faith in this country if they think a 71 year old chauvenistic war mongering, stroke risk could do a better job, than a young, charistmatic, voice of change. Because let's face it, who did better, John F. Kennedy or Richard Nixon. Let's remember out past.

News.blog: A new look for Facebook

Facebook first announced last year that it was working on a redesign of members' profiles. Now, the social-networking site has unveiled previews of its upcoming new look. The Facebook profile redesigns will start rolling out in the next few weeks.

With the new updates, you won't be able to see a member's entire profile on one screen. Personal information about someone will be included on one "tab" of a profile, whereas the "wall" -- public messages, developer-created applications, News Feed updates and other activity-related information -- will be on a separate tab. A third tab will link to the photos that the member has uploaded. Facebook has also said that members will be able to create separate tabs for their favorite applications.

Part of this is because of technical issues, Facebook has said, telling members that the changes will make the interface cleaner.
