Taking kids on winter day walks builds a healthy respect for nature
Scott Tyson, a pediatrician and CEO of Pediatrics South in Mt. Lebanon, Peters and Robinson. "If we could get these kids, instead of playing two hours of video games, to go out for a family walk, first it would strengthen the family ties, second it would really exercise the kids." When deciding where and when to go winter hiking with young children, the experts say, two goals should guide you: fun and comfort. These early experiences will shape your children's attitude toward outdoor activities, so keep it relaxed and upbeat. You're not bagging peaks or trying to whittle your pace to a personal best. You're just having fun together. Go to a walking trail in your local park and watch squirrels chase each other for as long as they hold your child's attention.
John Muir students get a lesson in medieval music
Fourth-grade students at John Muir Elementary School cover their ears Monday as Linda Wendt demonstrates the loud "bombarde," an early oboe-like instrument from Brittany in France. The instrument, used in parades, sounds like a cross between a bagpipe and a bicycle horn. .
Don't blame Duluth cops for action of one
I've been following the Jay Dailey story quite closely, and it only gets more bizarre. Can we get a blog about corrupt cops in this town?" Here's your blog. But it's probably not what you were expecting. To recap: A Duluth police officer, Jay Dailey, 42, was jailed Saturday after being treated for a gunshot wound. He is said to have been shot during a confrontation with Fulton County police officer Paul Phillips, who also was injured. Dailey faces four counts of felony aggravated assault. Gwinnett Police have not said much about what happened, but witness statements to the media paint this picture: Phillips was flagged down to help a distressed woman on Level Creek Road in Sugar Hill. He was off duty but in uniform and driving a marked patrol car.
Costs in Chinese factories rising, cheaper markets eyed
The higher costs mean Western consumers are bound to face steeper prices for iPods, TVs, tank tops and many other imported products made by small Chinese subcontractors. "Americans continue to want to buy at lower prices," said Kevin Burke, president and CEO of the American Apparel and Footwear Association. "They are used to going to the store during Christmas and getting something cheaper than a year ago." That's no longer a sure thing. For instance, American toy makers, who rely heavily on Chinese factories, expect prices to increase 5 to 10 percent for the 2008 holiday season, largely because of rising manufacturing costs. Costs in China are climbing nationwide, but the greatest pain is being felt in the south, where about 14,000 Hong Kong-run factories could close in the next few months, said Polly Ko of the Economic and Trade Office in Guangdong, which neighbors Hong Kong.

In a workshop on March 20 at Meridian Park Elementary School, city officials asked citizens for their input about the new facility. The new City Hall will be built at the site of its original Annex at the intersection of North 175th Street and Midvale Avenue North. The city has purchased the 1.7-acre Highland Plaza site as well as a 1.2-acre site of office and retail buildings located east of the Annex. The site does not include the Grease Monkey on North 175th Street. The total cost of the project is projected to be close to $25 million. Over a period of time, the city saved $12 million to begin the project and plans to borrow the remaining amount, paying off the debt with an allocation of real estate excise tax and money traditionally used for rent. A property tax increase to finance City Hall will not occur.
After 3 wins, Obama wins Maine, too
A Democrat victory in November's U.S. presidential race may well create a world-wide economic downturn that will make the current (healthy) downturn seem like a walk in the park. The short-term solution is to elect U.S. leaders who understand the importance of free-market capitalism. The long-term solution is to teach economics in government-run schools to create a population of voters who are able to intelligently evaluate the claims and promises of candidates who claim that government actions can regulate economic swings. We teach physical and biological sciences, but the "dismal science" is totally neglected. .
