| Design team taps WKU student
A college senior from Western Kentucky has been selected to work on a global design project to create a wind-powered water purifier to benefit impoverished areas that lack electricity. Zach Pearl, who is studying mechanical engineering at Western Kentucky University, is part of the five-member team contributing to the project from around the world. "Something like this could possibly be used where there isn't a safe source of drinking water," Pearl said. "This could save lives." The research is still in early stages, he said, but the group is using computer-generated conceptual drawings to examine the possibility of harnessing wind power. It's not Pearl's first attempt to design a water purification system. Last year he was part of a team that created a water purification system powered by pedals on a bicycle.
Buffalo's hard-working fans should be furious
There is no doubt Huet/Kolzig is a much better combo than Kolzig/Johnson, which should be McPhee's lone concern. Bruce Boudreau's relationship with Kolzig has been uneasy, and he coached Huet in the AHL. You can't fault McPhee's desire to get better. His team will scare someone if it gets to the playoffs. But, I can't help but wonder if the Caps should have somehow told Kolzig what was coming. - Pavel Kubina was the Maple Leafs who declined to waive his no-trade, to San Jose. Bryan McCabe, who was at least willing to consider it, never got an offer. Cliff Fletcher said there was no interest. - Did hosting the 2008 draft cost Ottawa Nikolai Khabibulin? Possibly. At least one other deal in the past few weeks was turned down by the Senators because it meant giving up that selection, which the team wants to hold so it can make a pick in front of their fans.

US tourists getting less bang for their bucks
A recent article in The Villager, a Manhattan neighborhood newspaper, noted that East Village Wines, a liquor store at 138 First Ave., accepts payments in euros as well as dollars. Over the last year through mid-January, the dollar has depreciated about 9 percent against the euro, 10 percent against the rupee, and 12 percent against the Chilean peso, said Jay Bryson, global economist at Wachovia. In the past, savvy travelers could hedge against the weakened dollar by buying a prepackaged tour. Tour operators set prices as much as 18 months in advance, so they can be printed in brochures and other marketing materials. Those travelers were essentially getting a built-in discount during the last couple of years as the dollar fell against other currencies. But not this year.
Morristown bike plan rolling forward
This month, Morristown is officially initiating the development of a bicycle plan for our town. On February 21, the Morristown Environmental Commission is holding the first Bicycle Planning Steering Committee Meeting to develop a vision for bicycling in Morristown and identify what needs to be in the Bicycle Plan. The Steering Committee includes representatives from the Town Council, the Planning Board, The Morristown Partnership, and citizen representatives for the four wards. We still need someone to represent the 2nd Ward. Last year, the Environmental Commission held a preliminary public meeting to educate the public about bicycle facilities that are possible in Morristown. We also conducted a survey of approximately 300 people on bicycle and pedestrian use in Morristown.
