Canoe found search goes on for boy missing on Eagle Mountain Lake

The Azle teen missing since a canoe capsized late Monday on Eagle Mountain Lake is known as popular, athletic boy, a family friend said.

Searchers early this morning found the canoe that capsized but not 16-year-old Joe Barnett who was paddling it with a 16-year-old girl, said Chad Lorance, spokesman for the Tarrant County Regional Water District.

Barnett and the girl, who is a friend from his neighborhood, were last seen about 5 p.m. pushing off from Shady Grove Park on the Azle side of the lake.

Debra Willis, a family friend, said teens loaded the 16-foot canoe with two bicycles they planned to ride on the Pelican Bay side of the lake.

The canoeists headed east along shore toward Pelican Bay, but the canoe capsized in rough, wind-swept water, according to reports.

Pounded for memory enhancements

Baseball players take performance-enhancing substances. Okay, not all baseball players do. As of this moment – not wishing to have my buns sued off – Roger Clemens never has.

Some bicycle racers do, too. And Olympic athletes, some of them.

And it's all okay with me.

I'm even thinking of taking a performance-enhancing substance myself. But here's where the situation gets tricky. Because I'm not sure it's okay with me.

This has nothing to do with ethics, though. It has to do with getting caught and getting kicked out of the newspaper game.

I'm thinking of taking Remember-fX. It's made by the outfit that makes Cold-fX. What Cold-fX does for colds, Remember-fX does for remembering. Why wouldn't it? It's made of the same stuff.

Ice closes schools; more could come

The snow hit late Thursday afternoon, quickly turning roads icy. Cold overnight temperatures meant the snow and ice stayed around, prompting public school officials to cancel Friday's classes, and leaving commuters to head back to work on slippery roads.Police responded to dozens of weather-related crashes Thursday night and Friday morning but reported no serious injuries. The Benton County Sheriff's Office reported that officers responded to at least 15 vehicle accidents and 30 reports of cars sliding off the road. No injuries resulted from the accidents, said Lt. Greg Ridler."The (deputies) that normally get off work at 3 a.m. were still here until 7:30 a.m.," Ridler said. "They were pretty exhausted when I got here in the morning."Ridler said the areas around Northwest Springhill Drive, Scenic Drive, Highway 20W and the west hills were especially problematic.Corvallis Police Sgt.

International Brain Awareness Week 2008

In the early 1900s, Sigmund Freud, Alois Alzheimer and Harvey Cushing were building their careers in neuroscience. Freud published his groundbreaking work The Interpretation of Dreams, Alzheimer identified Alzheimer’s disease, and Cushing was establishing neurosurgery as a specialty.

A century later, the Society for Neuroscience has more then 38,000 members and a Google search on neuroscience brings up more than nine million hits. Neuroscience has become one of the leading fields of scientific endeavor and almost daily scientific papers are published detailing new findings about the brain and its functions. .

Today's markets

Policymakers are worried that the slump could intensify this year as millions of mortgages reset at higher rates.

To combat the threat of a recession in an election year, the Bush administration has been negotiating with congressional leaders for an economic stimulus package of around $150 billion, focused on tax rebates for households and tax breaks for business.

The Jan. 22 rate cut, the biggest in more than two decades, was seen as an effort to boldly demonstrate that the central bank was prepared to do whatever it could to keep the country from slipping into a recession – or at least make the downturn milder than it would have been otherwise.

Financial market players had complained that once the credit crisis hit in August, the Bernanke-led Fed had been too slow in its response.
