Proud penny pincher to cash in 55,000 coins

In 1989, Vicki Armstrong started saving every single penny she had. Literally. Every little copper-colored coin she came across, she kept, even if a bill came to just 26 cents.

"I would give them a quarter and a nickel so I would get four pennies back."

Navy picks up state recruiting

Georgia (eight), Florida and Ohio (seven apiece) also have produced as many Navy football players as the Mids' home state.

Five consecutive years of success has increased Navy's profile within the state and an increased emphasis on local recruiting has paid dividends. Navy's current recruiting class contains three prospects from Maryland, including a pair of highly touted slot backs.

Ashby Christian of DeMatha Catholic and Jarren Brown of C.H. Flowers both project as ideal slots in Navy's triple-option system since they possess superb speed, quickness and moves.

Christian rushed for more than 3,000 yards and scored 25 touchdowns in two seasons as the starting tailback at DeMatha, the perennial private school powerhouse in Hyattsville, Md. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Bowie resident ran for 1,564 yards and 13 touchdowns this past season while helping the Stags to another Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship.

School Lunches Get Leafy in Los Angeles

The parent often becomes inspired to reduce red lights in the home and sometimes even in his or her own diet.

We were wondering if there is a flaw in the growth charts used by pediatricians. We have heard they were designed from averages of children in the 1940s living in the Midwest. Is there a chart we can use that might more accurately reflect what our children's weight should be? — Herb Weltig, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

Pediatricians and family physicians should use growth charts developed in 2000 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These are made up of measures from several national samples of children from the 1960s through the 1990s. There is even a body mass index growth chart for children age 2 years and older. Body mass index is a way to look at both weight and height and how they fit together.

Porkbusters Oust Green Over Flake Flap

Capitol Briefing explained last month why he believed Flake had little chance to win the seat, despite a concerted online lobbying effort for him. Flake is disliked by many members of the GOP Conference who, regardless of whether they agree with him on earmarks, believe the Arizonan is too interested in getting press attention by criticizing his own party.

But Flake's loss doesn't mean House Republicans are ignorant of the importance to their base of the earmarks issue. Before he won the seat, Bonner — never known before as a reformer — had to assure leaders he would say the right things on the issue. And when he got the slot, Bonner said, "The current earmark process has become a symbol of a broken Washington. I sought this seat on the Appropriations Committee because I believe the time for change and reform — especially of the appropriations process and the much scrutinized subject of earmarks — is now."

Republican leaders know that Flake is a cause célèbre in the blogosphere.

On Your Mind

I usually get some kind of response from the Senator (Jon) Kyl, but it is obviously a form statement. I may not agree with everything the congresswoman has done but I am glad she is working as hard as she is for us. But if you have to hold up a mirror to see your left hand, you won’t agree with anything a so-called "liberal" does. I am outraged to find out that a new building of the big box store size (almost 30,000 square feet, multi-story) is to be built right across the street from my home. I live just off El Camino Real on Calle Gardenia in the Village Meadows area. This is an established residential area with many residents having lived here 30 plus years. We have lived here for 17 years and this is the first we have heard of this plan. The building is for the new Boys & Girls Club.

Standing up to the crowd

Three things will happen: 1) The modern outfitter is a businessman and in business to make a profit. When the draw happens you simply get the names of the successful applicants and begin your marketing campaign. Now though, instead of going for numbers the outfitter will be selling truly quality hunts with 400 class bulls a very likely probability. Instead of needing 30 hunters to pay his leases he just charges more and only needs three. Thank you FWP for limiting hunters now I get bigger bulls (and more of them) and my clients love it! 2)The outfitter with marginal leases will simply move West (I hear some are already looking for leases in the western part of the state) 3)The resident hunter will begin picking up the marginal leases for themselves.

This proposal is supposed to have little effect on resident archery as a whole.
