Being in Florida, I really don't get to come home." Holmes' journey to the Hytche Center on Monday was a long time coming. It all started back in high school, when during a senior season that saw his team fall in the state semifinals, then-UMES coach Larry Lessett made a halfhearted recruiting effort to get him to play for the Hawks. "Some of the staff and faculty members turned him on to a couple of us local kids," Holmes said. "Aaron Wyatt [of Stephen Decatur] and I came out the same year of high school. He talked to both of us, but I think it was more of a thing where he thought I better talk to these kids because of outside pressure, because he never saw me play. Not once." Holmes did have some problems with his grades and thought about prep school, but ended up taking the junior-college route.
Fun and games in Barcelona
Femtocells, LTE, WiMAX; the delivery technology gets better, faster, stronger, but where is the content to fill these pipes? There were a few more companies than last year in the content hall of the conference centre, and noticeably more visitors to that area, but the industry remains extremely technology focused. Touch me Technology does, of course, influence the mobile content industry, and in terms of games, touch screen handsets look like the way forwards. Every handset manufacturer showed at least one iPhone copycat device and mobile games publishers are keen to exploit what will undoubtedly be a large installed base of users. Interfaces have always been a huge issue for mobile games and the touch screen could do much more to solve this problem than the original N-Gage or any number of failed joystick peripherals ever will.
Wildcats win eighth straight game, 2-1
Power plays were the difference in the game," Wildcats coach John Bowkus said. “We killed off a couple of theirs and were successful on two of our own." Detlefsen gave the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage 7:14 into the second period, with Kyle Delaurell and Adam Cardwell picking up assists. Later that period, Salazar scored a power-play goal, his team-leading 15th with a man advantage. Fairbanks' Nick Guran beat Mike Jarboe with 3:15 remaining, but it was the only puck that got by the Wildcats' netminder. Jarboe finished with 35 saves. The Wildcats, enjoying an eight-game win streak, have pushed their lead in the NAHL South to seven points over idle Topeka. .
Trouble in Toyland!
From Aqua Dots to Big Red Wagons, hundreds of toys have been recalled this year. With one of the biggest shopping days of the year coming up this week, most parents are wondering if the presents they plan to put under the tree are safe for their children. Today the Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group, known as WISPIRG announced results of their annual toy safety survey. The safety survey focused on three main concerns with childrens toys this year: toys with small pieces that could be choking hazards, those with powerful magnets, and toys that contain lead should all be left on the shelves. Half of all toy related deaths are caused by choking. So, before buying your childrens favorite little figurine you want to make sure there are no tiny pieces that could easily fall off and be swallowed.
Suit challenges Arnold's red-light camera tickets
If the owner denies it, he or she must fill out a form or otherwise identify the true driver. The ordinance forces you to come forward and "basically declare your innocence," says Washington University law school professor Peter Joy, who reviewed the suit at the request of the Post-Dispatch. "In essence, it sort of compels you to finger your wife or child or someone else you loaned the car to," he said. But Joy said that red-light camera ordinances have been upheld in most parts of the country, in much the same way as prosecutors can argue that drivers who refuse a Breathalyzer test during a drunken-driving investigation can be presumed to be under the influence. "It's a privilege to be able to drive ... it's not an absolute right," Joy said.
Interbike show -
Newly crowned time trial world champion Kristen Armstrong turned many heads as she walked the floor of Interbike in her rainbow stripes and gold medal. Cyclingnews chatted to her while she signed autographs at the Trialtir booth for TEAm Lipton's clothing sponsor Biemme. "Winning was amazing," she said. "And to have Christine Thorburn on the podium with me was incredible! I had it in my mind to win the world championships. I told myself last year when I was a bronze medalist that I had three more years before I retire." Even though TEAm Lipton's stated goal is to produce an Olympic winner, Armstrong knows how important winning worlds is to her as a cyclist. "I know that the Olympics are the pinnacle of sport in general and winning the rainbow stripes is the pinnacle of sport in cycling.
Canada's combat training role could take years
Stephane Lafaut, the outgoing head of the OMLT, said it's impossible to put a timeline on when the Afghan army will be able to stand on its own. "I have almost 25 years of experience and it's hard for me, and even for my bosses who are more experienced than myself, to put a date. So I don't know who can put a date," he said. "We're talking about years. How much time really it is going to take, we're not sure." The Afghan army presence in Kandahar has almost tripled since Canadians began working alongside its soldiers in 2006. There are now two full Kandaks - an Afghan battalion of about 600 men - in operation, plus a third that the military says is well on its way. Eventually, the goal is to have five Kandaks fully operational in the province, about 3,000 soldiers.
