Organizers of Sharebike venture aim to provide two-wheelers for area ...

A Roanoke group is launching a bicycle-sharing program that would let people sign out two-wheelers at between five and 10 area businesses and organizations to ride wherever pleasure or work takes them.

The not-for-profit venture, called Sharebike, is partly modeled on others that have moved scores of people in Europe and in U.S. cities such as Portland, Ore., and mobilized students on college and university campuses, including at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. Last summer Paris, yes, the city of light, put 10,000 public-use bicycles on its streets.

The goal is to provide inexpensive, environmentally friendly, calorie-burning transportation for people who don't drive, prefer not to or don't need to for where they are going. But other such enterprises have struggled with bike theft, abuse and breakage.

Universal brotherhood prevails at SGPC press

The capacity of SGPCs Golden Printing Press at Gurdwara Ramsar here is likely to be doubled soon. It supplies Sikh devotees all over the world with holy birs of Guru Granth Sahib.

The press prints less than 40,000 birs in a year while the demand is much more. Chief of the SGPC Jathedar Avtar Singh, who took up the matter with the state and centre governments to impose a ban on the publication and sale of the Guru Granth Sahib by private publishers and booksellers, has said the capacity of the press would be doubled shortly.

He said a new press would be established where holy birs would be published as per Sikh maryada. The process to publish the birs was lengthy since these were published keeping in view the Sikh traditions, he added.

True to the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, which preaches universal brotherhood, the publication of the birs in the press is being looked after by the machine men and workers who are mostly non-Sikhs from Nepal, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar, UP, New Delhi and other states.

Peter Crouch lifts the gloom at Liverpool

Haul down those distress pennants a notch. Relief was everywhere at Anfield. A finely taken header by Peter Crouch and a spring-heeled break from Fernando Torres brought Liverpool a win to chase the gloom away, at least for the time being.

December 2007

For those of you who don't know what a linchpin is, it is a pin that binds a wheel to an axle for support and stability. Unfortunately for Sarah that wheel is becoming very squeeky, especially after yesterday's Cape Cod Times editorial in the Cape Cod Times titled "A Failing Grade." Under the leadership of Sarah Peake the number of affordable units created was 10 times lower than it should have been, with over a third of the units only available to the elderly. What can I say, I warned voters in my radio ads about what happened when Sarah and her rich elitist gay friends promoted gentrification Provincetown by saying "Is this what you want coming to your town." I never expected that it would come so soon. I agree with the Cape Cod Times. Sarah, along with her close friends and campaign worker machine people who work at the affordable housing programs on the Cape, get an F. Of course there will be no affordable housing when the management of Cape housing organizations use their resources to promote their friends' political campaigns, just like when Sarah's best friend, and a manger at a Lower Cape housing organization, used her management status to smear opponents of Peake (including yours truly) to her subordinates and some of the organizations low-income tenants.

El Himer, Masai nab wins in Le Mans

I'm now looking forward to the French Championships (2 March in Laval, with the aim to match Noël Tijou's record of seven titles) but my preparation is geared toward a Marathon in April, either on 6th (Paris) or 13 (Rotterdam or London). The Le Mans race is profiled for 5000 and 10,000m runners. I hope to set the qualification standard for Olympic Games."

His personal best stands at 2:06.48 since 2003 while 2:10:30 is required to be selected.

“Last year was tainted by injuries, so since I'm self-coached I did some modifications in my training and I'm cautious about the reaction of my body," explained the 33-year-old. “I'm targeting a time around 2:08-2:07 in April."

Bernard Kiplagat, 19, struggled to join Le Mans as he came from the north of Kenya on Friday via London after an eight hour car trip and finally arrived in France the day before the race.
