WENDY ALEXANDER: Claims to have been 'vindicated'
Wendy Alexander claimed to have been "vindicated"after the Electoral Commission decided not to call in the police over the illegal donation to her Labour leadership campaign fund. But the Scottish Labour leader, whose campaign team admitted the donation broke the law, last night expressed "deep regret" that the money was ever accepted. "This has been a salutary and bruising experience," she said, admitting mistakes had been made. .
The Empire strikes out, and sports will be the downfall
Welcome to the decline and fall of the Roman empire, U.S. edition. Remember the great Roman empire? Its decline was not caused not just by greed, lust and indifference to civic virtues. Its decline — and you could look this up, except you won't find it anywhere — was caused by an unhealthy preoccupation with sports. The Romans became so lazy and soft and wealthy, their way of life crumbled as they filled local arenas for chariot races, gladiator fights and the occasional Christian fed to the lions. Sound familiar? Their empire and our empire have scary similarities. In ancient Rome, public executions were held at midday; in modern America, we have "The Jerry Springer Show." You think the emperor Romulus Augustulus was worried about crumbling roads and growing crime? No.
TALK ABOUT IT
While the liberal establishment may be conflicted over whether it wants Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential nominee, there's no doubt which Republican it favors. John McCain is the liberal elite's go-to guy in the GOP. They believe he'll be there for them when they need him. That was the essential message of last week's New York Times editorial endorsing McCain for the Republican nomination. "With a record of working across the aisle to develop sound bipartisan legislation, he would offer a choice to a broader range of Americans than the rest of the Republican field," said the Times. "We have shuddered at McCain's occasional, tactical pander to the right because he has demonstrated that he has the character to stand on principle." What the Times is saying here is that it does not take McCain's conservative campaign-season rhetoric seriously.
