A climate for eurosceptics

Undaunted, the EU climate change alarmists told us Kyoto is therefore just the beginnning. There hasn't been any discussion among economists or scientists about what the consequences for the world's food supply or the world's economy would be if for example the USA were to implement these drastic cutbacks. Nor is there any discussion of how the EU will persuade the US to adopt a mandatory program which will clearly weaken its economy when it agrees with China and India that they should not have to make comparable cutbacks. Their argument is that the "industrialized" nations created the problem so they alone should make the sacrifices. What they are telling Americans is that they should live more poorly so that Chinese and Indians can live better. Now how does Europe expect to sell that to a nation which is on the verge of an open trade war with it already?

High food prices push China towards GMO: scientist

However, soaring grains and food prices in 2007, and a relentless decline in arable farm land, may change the approach of bureaucrats who prize the nation's ability to stay self-sufficient in grains.

"I feel that over the next few years, things will move more quickly than in the last few years," said Huang Jikun, director for the centre for Chinese agricultural policy at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

"The government slogan has now changed to 'regularize oversight' from 'toughen oversight', and as we all know, 'toughen oversight' basically meant 'block it'."

Huang said it was impossible to predict when China might approve biotech rice, and added that work on soy and wheat was less advanced.

"They have changed their ideas because they see the usefulness of technology for maintaining grains security, raising rural incomes and other policy goals," he told reporters.

Wilmington undercover officers make drug, weapon arrest

Wilmington police arrested a 27-year-old man Wednesday night after he allegedly attempted to sell heroin to an undercover vice officer, police said today.

Mark Travis, of the first block of Delamore Place, agreed to meet the undercover officer in the 400 block of West St., said Wilmington police spokesman Master Sgt. Steven Barnes.

He arrived at 9:30 p.m. in a car driven by a 26-year-old woman whose 6-year-old daughter was in the back seat, Barnes said.

After Travis allegedly completed the drug deal, officers arrested him and found in his possession 26 bags of heroin stamped "sweet dreams," marijuana and a Glock 9mm handgun, Barnes said.

After obtaining a search warrant, officers conducted a search at Travis' residence and found 27 more bags stamped "high octane," a bag containing 3.3 grams of heroin, drug packaging supplies and $311 cash, he said.

Police to use text messaging to fight underage drinking

Others said they would never 'rat out' their friends. Still some others said they have a little trouble being confident no one would know it was them.

Police say the tips will be anonymous.

"We plan initially no follow up calls to the text or texter," explained Sgt. Thimons. "Our information we receive will be only as a tip to make sure a party doesn't occur."

However, the phone number could show up on court documents if charges are filed.

Police plan to launch the new text message program before prom season begins. A $6,000 SUDS grant from the Drug Free Community Council is making it happen. SUDS stands for Stop Underage Drinking and Sales. That's something local police and community leaders say is a huge problem.

Climate Protesters Plan Campaign of Direct Action Against UK Polluters

Climate change protesters have made plans for a nationwide campaign of direct action against greenhouse gas polluters across the UK. They warn that the campaign is set to become "more urgent" in the face of mounting evidence of growing environmental damage.

Hundreds of campaigners grabbed media headlines last summer when they set up a protest camp outside Heathrow and blocked the headquarters of airport operators BAA. Other demonstrators barred the entrances of the Department for Transport, alongside other high-profile stunts.

Now they say they will target Heathrow again but escalate the campaign by striking at other targets across the country. These targets are believed to include the Kingsnorth power station in Kent, where the German power giant E.ON is planning to build the first new coal-fired power station in the UK for more than 20 years.

Artists break a sweat riding pedal-car art exhibit; fun stops when ...

The video shows four art enthusiasts pedalling a hollowed-out car down Queen St. W., their pumping feet visible like Fred Flintstone's.

"Our little legs were going, we were breaking a sweat," art gallery director Elaine Gaito said yesterday.

They were riding an art exhibit titled "Shared Propulsion Car," a hollowed-out 1986 Buick Regal fitted with four pedal-and-gear mechanisms but missing the engine, transmission, electrical system and suspension.

Instead of headlights, votive candles burned behind the glass.

Gaito's Mercer Union Centre for Contemporary Art, at 37 Lisgar St., put the car on display with an opening-night bash Oct. 24. The next day, four friends of the work's creator, Montreal artist Michel de Broin, took it for a spin, topping speeds of 15 kilometres an hour.
