| Under-age alcohol sales caught out
A Borehamwood shop-owner was caught selling alcohol to underage customers during an operation to tackle illegal sales. Hertfordshire Trading Standards ran the five- day sting after recruiting 15 and 16-year-old volunteers to visit 48 shops in the county. In Hertfordshire, six out of 32 licensed premises sold alcohol to teenagers, while three out of 16 shops allowed children to buy cigarettes. One Borehamwood proprietor was caught on February 13, after failing to check how old the customer was. The business cannot be named for legal reasons. County councillor Richard Smith, executive member for community safety, said: "Unfortunately some shops were not abiding by the law, and we are not prepared to tolerate the sale of alcohol or cigarettes to underage customers. "Anyone selling age-restricted goods should adopt a 'Challenge 21' policy - if a customer looks under 21, then they should be asked to prove that they are 18." A Trading Standards spokesman said acceptable forms of identification are PASS-approved ID cards, or a photo driving licence or passport.
Save cash as you save the planet
For London commuters, the savings can be enormous. Drivers entering the city centre do not have to pay the congestion charge (now £8 a day), will often get free parking and - the best bit of all - the cost of recharging the car each night will add just £50 to a typical household's annual electricity bill. The annual saving in petrol alone could be £1,000, depending on your journey lengths and your car's fuel consumption. Those driving daily into the soon to be expanded congestion charge zone could save twice that amount. What it's worth to you: £2,000 a year 2. Mortgages For homeowners and first-time buyers who want a "green" mortgage the choice is limited - Norwich & Peterborough building society, the Co-operative Bank and Ecology building society are the three main lenders.
U.S. Hwy. 199 to receive two upgrades by fall 2008
GASQUET The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced Tuesday that two upgrade projects on U.S. Hwy. 199 are slated to be completed by fall 2008. Both projects were initiated by Caltrans for safety measures. The Hardscrabble Creek Bridge, also known as the Viggo "Vic" Meedom Memorial, was built in 1929. Caltrans is currently replacing the bridge before it becomes a safety hazard. The project started over the summer and will cost an estimated $3 million. "We're replacing it before it does wear out," said Julie East, spokesperson for Caltrans. "Bridges only last so long. We can stave off problems." The new bridge will be wider with 8-foot shoulders to better accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The contractor, American Civil Constructors, is using a technique known as the "jack and slide" method to replace the bridge.

TransAdelaide plan for fewer seats on our trains
TransAdelaide general manager Bill Watson has written to a disgruntled commuter who complained about a train carriage with reduced seating that has been on trial for six weeks. His letter to Seacliff Park commuter Ivan Winter says: "Standing room, especially in peak periods, is the reality of all public transport systems in all major cities." Mr Watson said replacing the decks of three seats along one side of Carriage 2103 with decks of two seats, did not cut the carriage's capacity because standing room had been increased. "My immediate reaction to that is that it is outrageous," Mr Winter said yesterday. "We ought to be developing and improving our public transport. Instead, what we're seeing from the operator is they are degrading it .
Tech Feature: Cannondale Carbon Rush Product Launch, September 23-24 ...
For 2007, Cannondale takes its popular off-road, dual suspension Rush mountain bike to a higher level. The new design sheds weight but gains stiffness by converting the frame’s front triangle from an aluminum alloy to a carbon material. The single-pivot Rush is designed for marathon and endurance cross country racers who want a high-performance, lightweight, full suspension bike. Cannondale boasts the Team Rush weight at only 10.75kg (23.7 lbs) with pedals. A few Cannondale-sponsored pros, such as Christoph Sauser, have already raced to World Cup podium success on the new carbon Rush, and Tinker Juarez was on hand for the weekend to hone the fit of his new carbon Rush after racing his alloy version thus far in 2006. After a second media preview in Europe next week, Cannondale will begin selling the 2007 Rush worldwide in late November 2006. In the meantime, demo bikes will be available at some dealers.

It grazed the SUV and hung on to finish the U-turn. In their rear-view window, though, Wilkerson's passengers were horrified to see the Denali flipping over and over, according to the sheriff's report. And that's when, Wilkerson admits, he made a really big mistake. He panicked and took off. "I freaked out," he says. "That's no excuse; that's so not me. But I had the people in my car yelling, 'Go, go, go!' and I just freaked out and panicked." Sheriff's deputies caught up with him just 10 minutes later. Because he fled the scene, it's understandable that the sheriff's deputies assumed that Wilkerson had something to hide. Their reports note that he smelled heavily of alcohol, that he'd admitted to smoking pot that morning, that he seemed drunk. The problem is, all the tests came back well under the legal limit.
Yorkregion.com - Newmarket - Slain cop's wife advocates for cycling ...
A cycling advocate is calling on cyclists across the province to put the wheels in motion and start pressuring politicians to improve cycle safety. The Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club welcomed cycling safety advocate Eleanor McMahon to its Tuesday night meeting in the Magna Room at the Aurora Public Library. Ms McMahon called upon club members to keep push for stiffer penalties for aggressive drivers who all-too-often terrorize cyclists on roadways across Ontario. “Cyclists do not get the respect on the roads we deserve," she said. “We're not all perfect, some of us run red lights and we have to work on that, too, but, in a collision, the car always wins." To that end, Ms McMahon is asking cyclists to band together and give their support to the creation of a formalized provincial cycling organization that can work with all levels of government to make communities safer and more cycle-friendly.
ADAC continues to set standard for industry
Most interior product lines are either represented in an ADAC showroom or have their own space there. For instance, international fabric companies Brunschwig & Fils, Duralee and Clarence House all have ADAC space. Showrooms include high-end furniture and antiques, rugs and floor coverings, kitchen design and equipment, lighting and lamps and virtually any item one finds in residential or commercial space. Additionally, local design luminaries such as Jerry Pair, Dorothy H. Travis and Leslie Holland have their own showrooms. While Atlanta is home to other design venues, such as Miami Circle, ADAC "helped establish Atlanta as a design center," said Savannah School of Art and Design-Atlanta interior design professor Liset Robinson. "As Atlanta grows, it's becoming a hub for interior design, and ADAC is certainly a part of that." Some professionals assert that ADAC is paramount nationally as a design destination.
